The first thing you need to consider when shopping for a new mattress is the size. Sounds easy enough, right? Before you shop, keep these considerations in mind: your room size, your partner’s needs, and your height.
First, here is a quick rundown on standard mattress sizes in inches:
To simplify things a little further, here’s a brief look at what you need to know.
Shopping for a child? Then you need a twin or twin XL/twin long (for the extra 5 inches of leg room). If you have bunk beds, then twin size mattresses are your best fit. To fit one twin in your room, you need a space of 7 x 10 feet; for two twins, you need at least a 9 x 9-foot space.
A full or double size mattress is excellent for single sleepers or for couples who need to save space and love to sleep cuddled together. Full size mattresses are also ideal for use in guest rooms or your teen’s room. To comfortably fit a double bed, your room needs to be 10 x 12 feet, or at minimum, 9 x 9.6 feet.
Queen size mattresses are the ideal starter mattresses for couples to sleep a little more comfortably than on a full. However, if it’s just you and you love to starfish, then a queen is the right bed size for you. Typically, queen mattresses are recommended for rooms that are 10 x 10 feet or 10 x 14 feet.
King mattresses are a serious upgrade when it comes to spreading out, especially if you have more than one child (or fur baby) who likes to cuddle with you. So, if you need to sleep without feeling every flip and flop of your sleeping brood, a king mattress is your solution. Make sure your room is at least 12 f x 12 feet in order to fit your mattress comfortably.
California king size mattresses are 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a standard king size. This means you and your partner can stretch out with extra leg room. So, if you or your partner are around 6’5” or taller, or your room is a bit narrow for a traditional king, a Cal king mattress is what you need.
Cal king-size mattresses are ideal in rooms that are 12 x 12 feet but can also fit in a 10 x 12-foot room.
