Dishwashers Make Your Dishes Shine

Hand-washing your dishes seems like a good idea, but it can be tiring and not that energy-efficient. With a new dishwasher, you can save on water and energy and spend less time with the after-dinner cleanup.

Dishwashers come in three main types: built-in dishwashers, portable dishwashers, and drawer dishwashers. So, whether you’re upgrading your dishwashing machine or setting up your major appliances in your new home, discover the dishwasher you need.

Built-in Dishwashers

Built-in dishwashers are installed under the countertop and come in three sizes: standard 24 inches wide, compact 18 inches wide, or tall tub dishwashers with standard dimensions.

  • Standard built-in dishwashers can wash 12 to 16 place settings, which is good for families who eat in a lot.
  • Compact built-in dishwashers fit 8 to 10 place settings per load, ideal for couples or small kitchens.
  • Tall tub built-in dishwashers can load taller items like platters and cookie sheets.

When it’s time for installation, keep in mind that most built-in dishwashers are 34-inches high and 24-inches deep.

Portable Dishwashers

Portable dishwashers are convenient if you have a compact apartment, are renting your home, or primarily spend your time in an RV or boat.

Most portable dishwashers can wash 8 to 12 place settings, have caster wheels for easy movement, and hook up to the kitchen faucet. So, if you don’t have that many dishes to wash and your home can’t accommodate a built-in, portable dishwashers are exactly what you need.

Drawer Dishwashers

Single or double drawer dishwashers are built-in dishwashers that have slide-out drawers. Drawer dishwashers are easier to reach and require less bending over, especially with single drawers being half the height of a standard dishwasher.

Each dishwasher drawer can wash about 5 place settings, so if you need to do a small number of dishes at a time these are the best dishwashers for you. Plus, if you choose a double drawer dishwasher you can be more energy efficient by running one drawer separately from the other.

Keep in mind that double drawer dishwashers are the same height as standard dishwashers, and require the same space for installation.

The Amount of Water New Dishwashers Use

How much water does a dishwasher use? On average, dishwashers use 3 gallons (or 12 liters) of water per cycle, which is drastically less than the 27 gallons of water used while hand-washing your dishes.

But if you want to save even more water, there are a couple things you can do:

  • Don’t pre-rinse dishes in the sink
  • Wait until you have a full load
  • Use eco settings like soil sensors or eco wash to use less water
  • Look for dishwashers with half-load wash settings

And if you want to save on energy, use the air-dry feature instead of heated dry.
